Beds

We make beds in many patterns, sizes and styles.  We have made traditional beds, sleigh beds, futon "holders", platform beds, and bunk beds.  We keep abreast of the many changes in the bedding industry (just how thick can they make mattresses, anyhow?), so that the questions we ask a customer about their bedding will ensure that the headboard is high enough so you can sit up and read in bed (if you are disposed to do so), that the mattress is not too high from the floor, so that the side rails can be seen or not seen as desired, etc.

All beds are built with bed bolt construction (as most old ones, and all good ones are).  Turned posts are made in one piece on a special lathe I made many years ago to accommodate sticks up to 9 feet long.

Box spring supports are custom made from iron strap to our specifications, and go from one side of the bed to the other providing additional support and strength.  King size beds have even more ironwork to suit the separate box springs so prevalent now.

Eagle Bed

Made for a customer who worked on Capitol Hill. This form is sometimes called a "plantation" bed. This example was made in Honduras Mahogany, and was fitted with a tester frame.

George's Bed

I saw this bed on a postcard picturing George Washington's bedroom at Mount Vernon brought to me by a customer. I made it for him in walnut, and years later visited Mount Vernon and saw that it was pretty accurate.

Rice Bed

Folks of Charleston, SC, used to have rice, tobacco, and other local products carved on their beds. The headboards were removable for better summertime circulation. We make this in a variety of configurations.
