The Custom Process

Ordering a piece from us is an
interactive process. Typically, there are three sorts of folks who end
up at our shop:
- Repeat customers. Most of our customers have done business with us
before. Once they experience what we can do, they keep coming back. Our
customers sometimes seem to enjoy the process as much as the product.
- People who are actively looking for a piece of furniture, but are
having trouble finding something that suits.
- People who aren’t yet aware that they are looking for a piece until
we introduce them to the process and the possibilities, and thereby
awaken the artistic notions that slumber inside us all.
The first step in the process is to decide on the form – will it be a
chair, chest, bed, etc.
Then we help the customer pick out the style they are most
comfortable with. We have many furniture books here at our showroom, and
it doesn’t take long to determine what the overall style will be.

We usually present choices of decorative details and encourage
customers to think of their own.
We then work out the decorative details, make a sketch and develop a
price. If the customer is comfortable with the cost, we often make a
full-sized pattern of the piece and deliver it to the customer’s house.
We have found that this extra step reduces the possibility of unhappy
surprises when we deliver the finished goods! Such surprises might
include making a piece too big to fit up a staircase, or out of
proportion for a specific spot.
We ask for a deposit before we begin work and ask for the balance
upon delivery and satisfaction.
